Day After Russia Sanctions, Trump Praises Putin: 'Very Smart!'

On Friday, Donald Trump tweeted that Putin was 'very smart' to delay actions after the Obama administration issued new sanctions.

On Thursday, the Obama administration announced various measures it is taking against Russia for its attempt to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
They include removing 35 members of Russian intelligence from the U.S. and imposing sanctions on a variety of government-related individuals and groups.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has reportedly decided to hold off on any responsive actions until the new administration is in place.
According to Reuters, "President Vladimir Putin refrained on Friday from retaliating for the U.S. expulsion of 35 suspected Russian spies, putting the onus on Donald Trump to help solve a crisis over Russian cyber attacks when he takes over the White House next month."
Subsequently, Donald Trump tweeted, "Great move on delay (by V. Putin) - I always knew he was very smart!"
Numerous Twitter reactions followed with one user noting, "Trump sides with Russia against America. I knew it."
Another said, "@realDonaldTrump Don't you think it might be more appropriate for you to praise the American president instead of the Russian president?"
Hours after the Thursday announcement on sanctions against Russia, Trump had issued a statement, “It’s time for our country to move on to bigger and better things. Nevertheless, in the interest of our country and its great people, I will meet with leaders of the intelligence community next week in order to be updated on the facts of this situation."
