Grieving families attended a funeral service on Monday for 24 people, mostly women and children, killed in the bombing of Cairo’s main Coptic cathedral complex.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday’s blast, one of the deadliest attacks on the Christian minority in Egypt in recent memory.

It targeted a chapel adjoining St Mark’s Cathedral that was used by women.

ISIL supporters however celebrated on social media.

Dozens of people were injured in the blast.

As angry survivors accused authorities of failing to keep them safe, Egyptians on the streets of the capital condemned the massacre.

“We are all brothers whether Muslim or Christian and we reject such acts. The government should set up military courts to speed up trials and verdicts when it comes to terrorism cases,” said Mustafa Tolba.

“It is very difficult for all of us, the Egyptian people. Nobody agrees to such an act whether Muslim or Christian or any other religion,” added fellow Cairo resident Ahmed Abdel Salam.

Egypt’s Coptic Christians have been targeted repeatedly by Islamist militants. This latest carnage comes just weeks before Christmas.
