German automaker BMW and Chinese tech giant Baidu called off their joint research project on autonomous cars on Friday. Baidu is now looking for a global partner in hopes of releasing self-driving cars to consumers by 2018. The two firms reportedly ended their cooperation due to different opinions on how to proceed with their research, according to Reuters. Although the companies are no longer working on self-driving technology, they will continue their high-definition mapping effort together.
