RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CALIFORNIA — Grainy security camera footage from a pet owner's backyard has captured the shocking moment a coyote killed a dachshund.

Video of the attack was posted to YouTube on Oct. 28.

In the dark of night, the wiley coyote managed to get over the 7-foot high wall surrounding the pet owner’s yard. Once inside, the beast crept around, probably searching for something to eat.

When the coyote caught sight of the female dachshund, Brandie, it tried to grab her. That’s when Brandie’s brother, Oliver, raced over and bravely tried to protect her. The coyote initially backed off, but then turned back and grabbed Oliver by the chest.

The coyote began to carry Oliver away, but another one of the dogs, Riley, stepped in. The coyote dropped Oliver, and ran away. Riley chased the coyote, but suffered a bite to the throat before the battle was done.

Riley survived, as did Brandie, who was unharmed. Their courageous brother Oliver was rushed to hospital, but had to be put down as a result of his injuries. He was 9 years old.
