The president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, recently made some critical comments about the U.S. presidential candidates and about America itself.
According to CBS News, Rouhani was speaking to a large local audience when he said, “Did you see the debate and the way of their speaking, accusing and mocking each other? Do we want such a democracy in our country? Do we want such elections in our country?”
He reportedly went on to say, “You see the United States that claims it has had democracy for more than 200 years. Look at the country, what the situation is where morality has no place.”
During his speech, which was also shown on live TV across Iran, Rouhani is said to have recalled attending the UN General Assembly and being asked if he had a preference for one of the nominees; he quoted himself as saying during the time, “Should I prefer bad to worse or worse to bad?”
Voice of America notes that the Iranian state broadcast network has provided extensive coverage of the U.S. election including airing two of the presidential debates.
Diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Iran remain frosty despite signing a much-publicized joint nuclear agreement.
