Man Has Hole In Esophagus After Eating Ghost Pepper

A recently published study documents the case of a 47-year-old man who ate a ghost chili puree in a contest and ended up vomiting so violently that he sustained a nearly inch-long tear in his esophagus.

A man suffered a serious complication after eating a ghost pepper which is known as one of the hottest peppers in the world.
The individual was reportedly participating in a contest when he ate a pureed version of the spicy ingredient on a burger and got extremely sick.
According to a recently published case study by doctors from the Bay Area, the 47-year-old arrived at the hospital “with severe abdominal and chest pain subsequent to violent retching and vomiting.”
Soon after the man was admitted, he was taken to the operating room where doctors found a nearly inch-long tear in his distal esophagus.
This condition is known as Boerhaave syndrome, an often fatal affliction where the esophageal tissue rips due to severe vomiting.
While the patient was released from the hospital after about three weeks, the doctors decided to document the case to raise awareness about the “...potentially life-threatening surgical emergency [which was] initially interpreted as discomfort after a large spicy meal.”
