SOLON, OHIO — An Ohio woman was shot dead after she was involved in a car accident.

The woman, a 53-year-old mother of three, Deborah Pearl was driving to work through the intersection of Richmond and Solon Road in Solon, Ohio, just after 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, when a SUV collided with her Ford Taurus. The SUV, a Jeep, driven by 29-year-old Matthew Ryan Desha, ran a red light and collided into the side of Pearl’s car sending it across the intersection. The SUV rolled several times and landed upside down.

Both drivers survived. Desha was able to exit his vehicle.

According to eyewitnesses, Desha, a former Marine, emerged from his car carrying an AR-15 rifle. He approached Pearl, who was still in her vehicle and threw her hands up in the air. Desha proceeded to shoot her several times. Pearl managed to crawl out of her vehicle through the passenger side as Desha continued shooting.

Witnesses counted four shots before a woman was heard screaming and then three more shots afterwards. One woman recounted seeing Desha pace back and forth and at one point walking up her driveway. Others said as cars drove by, Desha fired shots at them as well. One passerby told Desha to drop his weapon and he did. Another witness held him on the ground with one foot on Desha, the other foot on the rifle.

Police found Pearl lying in the road with several gunshot wounds. She was taken to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Desha has been charged with murder and was arraigned Monday via video appearance in Bedford Municipal Court. The man, who was arrested in May on felony gun and drug charges after a traffic stop, is being held on a $1 million bail.
