Jayashree Patankar

jayashree Patankar is an artist who has delibrately opted to adopt a style of painting that is almost exticnt. She has amalgamated the tradtiotional style of paintings known as 'Chitra kathi'. This form of painting was largely practised in Maharashtra and literally translated it means narrating a story by means of pcitures. Though typically these paintings were used as story boards to illustrate or highlight a point of the story, usually the epics of Ramayana or Mahabharata, Patankar is not fettered by the traditional storylines, she freely incorporates the contemporary life around her. Also the fact that the artist has had formal training in art from the Sir J.J.School of Art, Mumbai makes her compositions lean towards a westren approch with temperings of the traditional approach. Thereby creating an interesting visual language.
What is of an interest is a fact that the artist prefers to make her own colors from natural fibers, vegetable dyes. This infuses the works with the lost world effect though she also uses readymade watercolors as highlights or to build the base. Her works have a strong linear quality and are also two dimensional.
