FEMA Warns: The Spy Is Falling!

FIRST RESPONDERS FEMA GUIDE FOR SPACE OBJECT Re-ENTRY
Earlier this week, FEMA sent out a first responder guide to agencies across the country -- including Mid-Michigan -- in case pieces of the satellite end up in our back yards.

The federal agency that botched its response to Hurricane Katrina doesn't want to be caught unprepared in the event a crippled U.S. spy satellite tumbles back to Earth.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has issued to local police and fire departments nationwide a "First Responder Guide for Space Object Re-Entry." The cover letter from the FEMA Disaster Operations Directorate says the likelihood that the crippled satellite now on a collision course with Earth will strike the U.S. is low, but FEMA promises a lot of help if it does: "We will be there to support you, in great numbers if necessary, but as with all emergency response situations, the first few hours will require your readiness until state and federal help arrives."

The federal government is taking other steps to deal with the satellite. In the next two weeks, the Navy will try to shoot down the satellite over the Pacific Ocean, although there is no guarantee that will work.
