ORLANDO, FLORIDA — An idyllic vacation turned devastating for a Nebraska couple, after their son was snatched by an alligator at a Florida resort.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that the family of five had been relaxing near the Seven Seas lagoon at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Their 2-year-old toddler was wading in about a foot of water when an alligator surfaced to attack him.
The boy’s father desperately tried to wrestle his son from the gator’s jaws. The mother also ran into the water to help, but both were unsuccessful, as the animal dragged the boy into the lagoon, reports WESH.
The distraught parents alerted a lifeguard to the gator attack. Officials estimate that the gator was anywhere from four to seven feet long.
Police have cordoned off the area near the water, as search and recovery operations are underway in the lagoon. Helicopters have also been dispatched to search overhead, but the boy has yet to be found.
Signs near the lagoon warn against swimming, according to CBS, but there were no notices posted warning of gators in the area.
