On May 27th, 2016, a Pennsylvania woman was infected with a super strain of the E. Coli virus, that is resistant to Colistin. Colistin was developed in the 1950s, but doctors largely stopped prescribing it due to its severe side effects. The drug has seen a comeback in the last ten years as a last resort drug, for when other antibiotics fail. Doctors pointed out that drug-resistant infections are not new, and that the overprescription of antibiotics is part of the problem.
