00:01:00At your excellency's request, I applied for special leave from the Bureau in order to
00:01:15make an investigation in your state.
00:01:19My notes contain all the essential facts, but my injuries make this transcription into
00:01:29a presentable manuscript painfully slow.
00:01:35When finally completed, I will submit the following as a full report on parole conditions
00:01:44which resulted in the release of dangerous criminals who at once returned to their lives

00:02:57Governor Mallinson?
00:02:58I'm glad you got here, Mr. Hendricks.
00:03:01Nobody saw you, I hope.
00:03:02I don't believe so, sir.
00:03:03Good.
00:03:04Gentlemen, this is Mr. Richard Hendricks, our host, the State's Attorney General, Mr. Whitmore.
00:03:09It's a pleasure, sir.
00:03:10Glad to meet you, Mr. Hendricks.
00:03:11My name is Hughes.
00:03:12Mr. Hughes?
00:03:13Our Commissioner of Metropolitan Police.
00:03:15Won't you sit over here, Mr. Hendricks?
00:03:17Let me take your hand.
00:03:18What can I get you?
00:03:19Oh, a little ginger ale, if you please.
00:03:21Right.
00:03:22You know, Hendricks, all this secrecy may seem a little ridiculous to you, but you realize,
00:03:28of course, your identity must not go beyond the three of us in this room.
00:03:32It's only fair to warn you that our two previous investigators fared rather badly.
00:03:37We found one of them with enough lead in him to start a pipe factory.
00:03:40The other simply disappeared.
00:03:43Thanks for warning me.
00:03:45Oh, thank you, sir.
00:03:46You're welcome.
00:03:49Well, gentlemen, I left Washington in such a hurry that I wasn't given a very complete
00:03:54briefing on your particular problem.
00:03:56But offhand, I would say the trouble is in your parole board.
00:03:59During the past six months, prisoners of such low character have been paroled.
00:04:04I now suspect criminal conspiracy.
00:04:06Well, do you appoint the parole board, Governor?
00:04:09Yes, I do.
00:04:10Well, why not replace them?
00:04:12You see, those appointments are made for a period of six years, and nobody, not even
00:04:16the Governor himself, can remove a board member for any reason other than proven malfeasance
00:04:20of office.
00:04:21I see.
00:04:23That kind of ties things up, doesn't it?
00:04:27Well, gentlemen, I've been figuring how to go about this investigation.
00:04:31Well, forgive me for pacing, Governor.
00:04:33I think better this way.
00:04:36As I say, I've been figuring how to go about this investigation, and I've come to the
00:04:39conclusion that I must pose as a parole violator.
00:04:42Oh, incidentally, does the name Richard Murdoch sound familiar to you?
00:04:47Richard Murdoch?
00:04:48He was in that payroll stickup.
00:04:50His last job was the Milberg Trust Company holdup.
00:04:52Oh, yes, I remember now.
00:04:54Well, Murdoch was paroled and then quietly skipped the country.
00:04:59So quietly, in fact, that not even the grapevine has the information as yet.
00:05:03And you propose to assume the identity of Murdoch.
00:05:06That's right.
00:05:07Only I'll call myself Rick Carson, since Murdoch naturally would be using an alias.
00:05:12Now, as Murdoch, alias Rick Carson, I must become friendly with someone who has been
00:05:18through the parole mill in order to find out how his parole was engineered.
00:05:22Have you anyone in mind?
00:05:24No, but it should be someone whose parole was obviously bought.
00:05:28I figure that if someone pays for a parole, someone must receive the money.
00:05:33While you're working undercover as Richard Murdoch or...
00:05:37Rick Carson.
00:05:38Carson, you'll have to avoid any contact with the police, even in an emergency.
00:05:51Here's my private telephone number where you can reach me any time, day or night.
00:05:57Metropolitan 6267.
00:05:59Metropolitan 6267.
00:06:02I'll remember it.
00:06:06Do you have anyone coming up for parole who fits our special requirement?
00:06:11There certainly is.
00:06:12A convict by the name of Harry Palmer.
00:06:15And when is the next parole board meeting?
00:06:18Let's see.
00:06:19Next Tuesday at the state prison.
00:06:21Next Tuesday at the state prison.
00:06:27Let me see.
00:06:31You're now serving time for attempted murder, Palmer.
00:06:35Do you have anything to say about that?
00:06:38Yeah, it was a phony rap.
00:06:40A lot of things about my trial smelled plenty bad.
00:06:42So does your police record.
00:06:44Do you think you've learned your lesson during your time in prison?
00:06:47I sure have, ma'am.
00:06:49I found out that crime don't pay off.
00:06:51Besides, I realize the things I've done ain't fair to Glenda.
00:06:54She's my wife.
00:06:55If you are paroled, will you conscientiously try to live a clean and decent life?
00:07:00Sure.
00:07:02You can bank on that, Reverend.
00:07:06You think you can earn a living?
00:07:07Honestly, I mean.
00:07:09You bet.
00:07:10I'm promised a job as chauffeur to Miss Dumont.
00:07:12She owns a pastime club.
00:07:13It's all my application there.
00:07:15If you give me this one more chance, I promise I'll never step off the straight and narrow again.
00:07:20Why, he isn't sincere.
00:07:21He's merely playing on our sympathies.
00:07:24All right, Palmer.
00:07:25You may return to your duties.
00:07:26You'll be notified by the warden of the action of this board.
00:07:43And I feel in my heart that Palmer is sincere.
00:07:46The poor man has never had a fair chance to rebuild his ruined life.
00:07:52Therefore, for the wife's sake as well as his, I favor paroling him.
00:07:57And what about you, Mr. Jones?
00:08:00It seems to me that keeping a man behind bars when he can earn a living is a needless waste of taxpayers' money.
00:08:05I vote for his parole.
00:08:08And your decision, Reverend?
00:08:10As you well know, I usually bend over backwards to give the misguided unfortunate a chance.
00:08:17But in the case of Harry Palmer, my conscience compels me to oppose his parole.
00:08:24And your decision, Mr. Perkins?
00:08:26Palmer deliberately broke the law.
00:08:28Not once, but many times.
00:08:30Freeing a man like Palmer makes a travesty of justice.
00:08:33I am positively against paroling him.
00:08:36Well, it seems we're evenly divided.
00:08:38Two for and two against Palmer's parole.
00:08:41Consequently, as chairman of this board, it becomes my duty to cast the deciding vote.
00:08:47A decision like this must come from the heart as well as the mind.
00:08:51It must be tempered with humanity and understanding.
00:08:55I watched Palmer when he made his plea, and I'm convinced of his sincerity.
00:08:59In view of this, I must cast my vote with Mrs. Prescott and Mr. Jones in favor of Palmer's parole.
00:09:06This is an outrage, Holliday.
00:09:07At least a half a dozen times in the past few months you've done the same thing.
00:09:11I just don't understand.
00:09:12I'm entitled to my vote the same as you, Mr. Perkins.
00:09:17Now, Palmer will have served his minimum sentence on the 22nd of this month.
00:09:22His parole will become effective on that date.
00:09:26I learned that Palmer's wife, Glenda, was working as a waitress at the pastime club.
00:09:33So I decided to hang around.
00:09:36I'll delete that hang around.
00:09:39So I decided to drop around to the club to look the situation over.
00:09:46♪
00:10:11The pastime club proved to be a not too popular combination gin mill and cheap cafe.
00:10:18A hangout for a lot of undesirable characters.
00:10:22♪
00:10:37May I take your order, sir?
00:10:39Can't make up my mind.
00:10:40I'm a little undecided between a hamburger and a ham sandwich.
00:10:44Take the ham sandwich.
00:10:45You've got a deal.
00:10:46Coffee, too?
00:10:48Yes, black, please.
00:10:50♪
00:11:01It's quite a place you got here. Do you own it?
00:11:04You must be new in town. I only work here.
00:11:06Jojo Dumat owns the place.
00:11:08Oh, I learned Mr. Dumat's got a nice place here now.
00:11:12Miss Jojo Dumat.
00:11:14In fact, there she is now.
00:11:17♪
00:11:25I learned from Glenda that the owner of the place was Jojo Dumat.
00:11:30A woman of striking personality who had her own apartment in the club.
00:11:34♪
00:11:43One group of hangers-on seemed to be tied in with Jojo.
00:11:47It was difficult to find out how.
00:11:50They were quite bold about it.
00:11:52The tie-in was a lucrative sideline which Jojo operated.
00:11:57An illegal punch board racket.
00:11:58The three salesmen were Blackie Olsen, Frank Mitchell, and Kid Redman.
00:12:04They sold to the cooperative customers who were always glad to make a dishonest dollar.
00:12:10Duke Vigili, another of Jojo's willing workers,
00:12:14spent most of his spare time trying to cheat a slot machine.
00:12:18During his working hours, he called on the less cooperative prospects.
00:12:23For these, he had three convincing arguments.
00:12:25Two hard fists and a .45 caliber revolver.
00:12:30The straw boss of the outfit, Charlie Newton, dignified the job by calling himself manager.
00:12:36He tried to appear a legitimate businessman.
00:12:39But the only thing legitimate about Newton was a long police and prison record.
00:12:46Such were evidently the pals of Harry Palmer.
00:12:49They didn't trust me from the very first.
00:12:51However, during the two weeks until Palmer's parole,
00:12:54I managed to strike up a casual acquaintance.
00:13:03Never mind the cream.
00:13:08I understand you've been around a little, Carson.
00:13:11A little, here and there.
00:13:13Stick around for a while?
00:13:15Maybe. It all depends.
00:13:17On what?
00:13:18Maybe it depends on you, Newton. You run the joint.
00:13:20I thought you might have something in mind.
00:13:22Not a thing.
00:13:24Besides, I'm only the manager.
00:13:26I don't own the place.
00:13:28Miss Dumas does all the hiring and firing.
00:13:32Well, I guess I'll have to make it my business to get acquainted with Miss Dumas.
00:13:36Oh, that did it.
00:13:39Gin, that's three games.
00:13:41Never saw such luck.
00:13:43You play like a dope, kid.
00:13:45Am I right, Duke?
00:13:46You always play like a dope.
00:13:48Yeah, I always play.
00:13:51Five more. Fifteen dollars.
00:13:53I'll take you on, Carson.
00:13:55Okay, Mitchell. Deal.
00:13:57What do you think of this mug, Carson?
00:13:59I haven't decided yet.
00:14:01Got something in your mind, Duke?
00:14:03Yeah, something very interesting.
00:14:05That'll keep.
00:14:07Kidding aside, though, I would like to make a connection.
00:14:10What kind?
00:14:12Oh, I'm not particular.
00:14:14I like the climate here. It's good for my health.
00:14:16What is your record, Carson?
00:14:18Oh, anything that pays off.
00:14:21Hey, Frank.
00:14:23Harry Palmer's back. Come to JoJo's apartment.
00:14:26I'll be right there.
00:14:28Keep the cars warm. I'll be right back.
00:14:30Yeah, I'll stack the deck while you're gone.
00:14:32I'll bet you would.
00:14:38I would have given a lot to know what was going on in JoJo's room.
00:14:42I found out later from statements of various people concerned.
00:14:46Sure looks natural.
00:14:48Just like old times.
00:14:50Feeling better, Glenda?
00:14:52Wonderful. Seems like a hundred years since I saw you, darling.
00:14:55Yeah, me too.
00:14:57That's what I've been waiting for.
00:14:59Frank will be here in a minute.
00:15:01Well, let's call for a celebration.
00:15:03How about fixing some drinks, Flanky?
00:15:05Okay, JoJo. Sure I'd like her.
00:15:12What's on your mind, Charlie?
00:15:13Nothing.
00:15:15How long are you going to keep Palmer on as your chauffeur, JoJo?
00:15:17Are you kidding?
00:15:19What do you think I got him out for?
00:15:21Chauffeurs are a dime a dozen.
00:15:23The boys are all right fixing the boards.
00:15:25Palmer's the best collector we ever had.
00:15:27As long as he keeps his nose clean.
00:15:31The next time he gets in trouble pulling off side plays,
00:15:34I'll let him rot in the pen.
00:15:38Hiya, Harry. How goes it?
00:15:40Oh, it's great to see you, you old son of a gun.
00:15:41Papa's home, huh, baby?
00:15:43How does it feel?
00:15:45Feels grand.
00:15:47Glenda's been in a tough spot, but she came through okay.
00:15:49Yeah, but it's a lucky thing you got the parole just now.
00:15:51What do you mean by that, Crack?
00:15:53Oh, nothing, but there's been a guy named Carson
00:15:55hanging around the past few weeks,
00:15:57and he's been making a play for her.
00:15:59That's not true, Harry.
00:16:01Duke's the one who's been on the make
00:16:03ever since you went away.
00:16:05Me, make a play for you? Ah, you're crazy.
00:16:07That'll be enough, Duke.
00:16:09I haven't met this character Carson yet,
00:16:11but I can tell you one thing.
00:16:13Glenda's been absolutely on the up and up.
00:16:15I knew that, but thanks for telling me, Jojo.
00:16:17Court popped, folks. Help yourselves.
00:16:19I mean on Jojo.
00:16:24Here's to you, sweetheart.
00:16:26Here's to us.
00:16:28What's Duke beefing about?
00:16:30He doesn't like Rick Carson.
00:16:32But I can truthfully say Carson never got fresher.
00:16:34Handed me a line.
00:16:36Forget it, sweetheart. Run along and change your dress.
00:16:38But hurry back.
00:16:40I won't be long.
00:16:42How do you feel, Harry?
00:16:44Hey, listen, Harry.
00:16:46I didn't mean any slur on Glenda, but...
00:16:48Forget it, Duke.
00:16:50Well, I've been keeping my mouth shut
00:16:52because I haven't got proof yet.
00:16:54But as sure as I'm standing here,
00:16:56that guy Carson's either a copper or a stoolie.
00:16:58I know every cop in the state.
00:17:00Well, he might be one of J. Edgar Hoover's boys.
00:17:02Carson's no more FBI than I am.
00:17:04That's all we need around here, a copper.
00:17:06Especially when business is just beginning to boom.
00:17:07He lives at the Colvin Hotel right down the street.
00:17:09Why don't we search his room?
00:17:11There must be something around to tip us off.
00:17:13I can get in. I know the night clerk.
00:17:15Sure.
00:17:17The kid in black he could investigate.
00:17:19Then we'd know exactly how things stand.
00:17:21JBI, that's me. JoJo's Bureau of Investigation.
00:17:23Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:17:26Hello, Mr. Carson.
00:17:28Oh, hello, Glenda.
00:17:30Say, this looks like the beginning of a second honeymoon.
00:17:32You like my new dress?
00:17:34Pretty sharp.
00:17:35I hope my husband will like it.
00:17:37Sure he will.
00:17:39Oh, here he is now.
00:17:41Honey, this is Rickerson.
00:17:43Glad to see you, Palmer.
00:17:45Glenda was telling me about you.
00:17:47I was telling Harry how polite you've been.
00:17:49That's a great deal more than I can say about most of the customers.
00:17:51Oh, thank you, Glenda. That's a real compliment.
00:17:53See you around.
00:17:55Glad so. Anytime.
00:17:57Good luck to you both.
00:18:00How long will it take to search Carson's room?
00:18:02Oh, it won't take over an hour.
00:18:03Only, the clerk doesn't come on till 8 o'clock.
00:18:05Sometimes maybe a little later.
00:18:08Suppose I arrange to keep him occupied between 8 and 10.
00:18:12You haven't even met Carson.
00:18:14So, you'll introduce me.
00:18:17I think I can keep him interested for a couple of hours.
00:18:28Oh, no more of those bastards, please.
00:18:34Oh!
00:18:36This is station WXNO.
00:18:38The time, 20 minutes before 10 o'clock.
00:18:41We continue with...
00:18:43What time is it?
00:18:45I just announced it, 20 minutes to 10.
00:18:47I think I better be going, Jojo, before I wear out my welcome.
00:18:49Oh, no, no, no.
00:18:51It's evening, still young.
00:18:53Besides, I think you're swell.
00:18:56I think you're a wonderful guy.
00:18:58Really.
00:19:00If you think I'm swell, you ought to meet my pal Monty.
00:19:01There's a real guy for you.
00:19:03Oh, I bet he ain't half as nice as you.
00:19:06What's his name?
00:19:08Monty, Monty Cooper.
00:19:10Oh, yeah, he said that.
00:19:12It's a nice name, Monty Cooper.
00:19:15Well, go ahead, call him up, tell him to come on over.
00:19:18Oh, well, I couldn't do that.
00:19:20You see, Monty isn't in town.
00:19:22Oh, that's a shame.
00:19:24When's he coming back?
00:19:26Well, now, that all depends.
00:19:28Confidentially, Jojo.
00:19:29Monty's in prison.
00:19:32That's a shame.
00:19:34Poor Monty.
00:19:36Locked up in the pen.
00:19:38Yeah.
00:19:40Well, forget I said anything.
00:19:42I talk too much.
00:19:44Oh, you can trust Jojo, honey.
00:19:46Yes, sir.
00:19:48Oh, fix another drink.
00:19:50I'll be right back.
00:19:52Yeah.
00:19:55Hello.
00:19:57Oh, hello.
00:19:59Oh, Mary.
00:20:01Oh, I'm so glad to hear from you.
00:20:04How you been getting along?
00:20:06Now, listen, Jojo.
00:20:08We got the lowdown on that bird Carson
00:20:10when we're on our way back.
00:20:12You better get rid of him.
00:20:14Oh, oh, that's fine.
00:20:16I'll do that.
00:20:18Yeah, goodbye, Mary.
00:20:24You don't have to be a G-man to know that that was Mary.
00:20:29Oh, honey, you were listening.
00:20:31Yeah.
00:20:33Oh, no, I don't want any more tonight.
00:20:35Uh-huh.
00:20:37I can feel it coming.
00:20:39I'm about to be tossed out.
00:20:41You don't mind, do you?
00:20:43I'm beginning to get a terrific headache.
00:20:45I'll probably have one in the morning, too.
00:20:47Want an aspirin?
00:20:49No, thanks, just my hat.
00:20:55Well, good night, Jojo.
00:20:57It was a swell evening.
00:20:59Mm-hmm.
00:21:11What'd you find out?
00:21:13Something very interesting.
00:21:15We got the dope on him all right.
00:21:17Oh, good.
00:21:21That is interesting.
00:21:26Hiya, Rick.
00:21:27Hi.
00:21:29How you doing?
00:21:31How's everything?
00:21:33What's up, Duke?
00:21:38Oh, hello, boys.
00:21:41Well, let's hear it.
00:21:43What's the dope on Carson?
00:21:45What do you think of that?
00:21:47His name ain't even Carson.
00:21:49Richard Murdoch.
00:21:51Age 32.
00:21:53Date of birth 9-15-16.
00:21:55Detroit, Michigan.
00:21:57Occupation, mechanic.
00:21:59Yeah, it had me puzzled for a minute or two.
00:22:01Then it came to me.
00:22:03This guy Murdoch and a pal of his,
00:22:05a fellow named Monty something-
00:22:07Monty Cooper?
00:22:09Yeah, that's it, Monty Cooper.
00:22:11Well, anyway, Carson or Murdoch and his pal Cooper
00:22:13pulled that Milberg Trust Company hold up
00:22:15about a year and a half or so ago.
00:22:17Yeah, we found some newspaper clippings
00:22:19about that robbery.
00:22:21He had them hidden between the cushions of a chair.
00:22:23He hadn't figured on your JBI.
00:22:25Good for you.
00:22:27He was beefing about something.
00:22:29Okay, okay, but don't say I didn't warn you guys
00:22:31if something goes wrong.
00:22:35Now, get this picture.
00:22:37This is the Milberg Trust Company,
00:22:39a real old broken-down joint.
00:22:41There's the flight of stairs where we came up.
00:22:43This is the vault here, a real old-fashioned camp.
00:22:45Well, the stairs made it a little tough
00:22:47because we had to back down them
00:22:49and we couldn't see who was coming up anyway.
00:22:51We come in here and there's all kinds of desks
00:22:53and places where you write out checks and so forth.
00:22:55There's quite a few people.
00:22:57We put them in a corner, keep them all together.
00:22:59Monty takes the cashier, forces him in over here,
00:23:02makes him open the vault.
00:23:04We open this little old-fashioned can
00:23:06and what do you think we get?
00:23:0850 Gs.
00:23:10We back out of the joint and make for the car.
00:23:1250 Gs? Split two ways?
00:23:14Not bad.
00:23:16You see, Monty and I don't go in for big mobs.
00:23:19Hey, maybe you saw Monty up there.
00:23:22He was doing a heavy stretch.
00:23:24Yeah, I saw him almost every day
00:23:25and talked to him a couple of times.
00:23:27But he didn't get overly friendly with anyone.
00:23:30Yeah, that's Monty, all right.
00:23:32Well, Harry, I'll tell you.
00:23:34I got another big job on tap,
00:23:37but I gotta get Monty out of prison
00:23:39before I can pull it off.
00:23:41That's tough to do unless you know the ropes.
00:23:43Besides, it takes two grand.
00:23:45How do you know?
00:23:47I just know.
00:23:49Harry, I figure naturally you just getting out
00:23:52you could kind of tell me how your parole was engineered.
00:23:55Now I'm willing to cut you in for a third
00:23:57and I'll pay all expenses.
00:23:59Yeah, I don't know.
00:24:01Well, what's the matter?
00:24:03Ain't my dough as good as the next guy's?
00:24:05No, it ain't that, Rick.
00:24:07Look, I'll let you in on a little secret.
00:24:09Maybe you noticed the boys got kind of friendly
00:24:11the last couple of days.
00:24:13So?
00:24:14Well, they checked on you
00:24:16and you're okay with most of them.
00:24:18But Duke's still holding out.
00:24:20He ain't satisfied you're on the up and up.
00:24:22Well, what's that got to do with me
00:24:23JoJo's the first step
00:24:25and unless she's sure of her ground,
00:24:27no dice.
00:24:29All right, so there's no dice with JoJo.
00:24:31And who's the next step?
00:24:33Now, wait a minute.
00:24:35Not so fast.
00:24:37I'm no squealer, Rick.
00:24:39Oh, but you do know who the higher up is.
00:24:41Maybe.
00:24:43But I ain't saying.
00:24:54Harry, let me ask you another question.
00:24:59Who put up the money for your parole?
00:25:02Why, JoJo put it up.
00:25:04The deal is I'm to pay her back.
00:25:06Oh, so she didn't put it up.
00:25:08She just advanced it to you.
00:25:10Yeah, that's right, but...
00:25:12Well, why cut in JoJo
00:25:14when you can easily go around her
00:25:16and pick up a couple of G's for yourself?
00:25:18All right, later on if you want,
00:25:20I'll give you the money.
00:25:21Do it yourself.
00:25:23All right, later on if you want to cut her in,
00:25:25that's your business.
00:25:27You might have something there, Rick.
00:25:29At least it's worth it.
00:25:31Glenda's home.
00:25:33Don't say anything to Glenda.
00:25:35Hello, darling.
00:25:37Hiya, baby.
00:25:39I'm tired.
00:25:41We had such a busy day at the club.
00:25:43Rick, you're not leaving?
00:25:45Yeah, I think I better be going.
00:25:47Why don't you stay for dinner?
00:25:49It won't be very fancy, but you're welcome.
00:25:51See you in a minute, huh?
00:25:53Okay. Sorry you won't stay, Rick.
00:25:59Can you get the two grand?
00:26:01Harry, whenever I need a few G's,
00:26:03I don't let anything stand in my way.
00:26:05Get the dough.
00:26:21I called the commissioner and told him
00:26:23I was all set to buy a parole
00:26:25for a pal of mine named Monty Cooper.
00:26:27But I had to have $2,000.
00:26:30He agreed.
00:26:32But as the boys were somewhat suspicious of me,
00:26:34and in order to gain their confidence,
00:26:36it ought to look like I had a hiccup.
00:26:39Go ahead, read it.
00:26:41Philanthropist.
00:26:43Philanthropist.
00:26:45Philanthropist.
00:26:47Philanthropist.
00:26:49Philanthropist.
00:26:51Philan...
00:26:53Well, anyway, Rob.
00:26:55Bandit ignores jewels.
00:26:57Gets $2,000 cash.
00:27:00Neil Ingersoll, civic leader,
00:27:03was held up last night
00:27:05and relieved of $2,000 cash
00:27:08by a bandit who claimed he was not interested in jewels.
00:27:14Ingersoll, returning home at a late hour
00:27:17from an auction of...
00:27:19Antiques.
00:27:21What's a def?
00:27:23Which he had been attending,
00:27:25stepped out of his car outside his garage
00:27:28to find himself looking into the muzzle of a gun.
00:27:32That must have been Carson.
00:27:34What makes you think I know?
00:27:40When we reached the lobby of an office building,
00:27:42Palmer told me I couldn't go upstairs with him.
00:27:44This was disappointing.
00:27:46But I heard him tell the elevator operator
00:27:48to take him to the fifth floor.
00:27:49So I checked the names of all the tenants
00:27:51on that particular floor.
00:27:53There were over 20.
00:28:04Miss Dumont in her quarters.
00:28:06Yeah.
00:28:09Good jerk.
00:28:14Hello, Bonnie.
00:28:16Hello, Jojo.
00:28:18What's on your mind, darling?
00:28:23You seemed as cross as a bear
00:28:25when you phoned to say you were coming over.
00:28:27Somebody's talking too much around here.
00:28:29You mean me?
00:28:31I don't know whether it's you or Newton,
00:28:33but one of you is and I don't like it.
00:28:35As a matter of fact, I won't stand for it.
00:28:37You've no reason to talk to me like this.
00:28:39I'm sorry, my dear.
00:28:41I don't mean to be discourteous, but I'm worried.
00:28:44For you as well as for myself.
00:28:45Just a little while ago,
00:28:47one of Newton's boys came over to my office
00:28:49and demanded that I get a parole
00:28:51for a fellow named Monty Cooper.
00:28:53Monty Cooper?
00:28:55That's the name he gave me, Monty Cooper.
00:28:59But Carson or Murdoch, whatever his name is,
00:29:03he knows nothing about our parole arrangements.
00:29:06Who said anything about Carson or Murdoch?
00:29:08The fellow who came to see me was Harry Palmer.
00:29:12He's double-crossing you, Jojo.
00:29:14I can't believe it.
00:29:16You can't, huh?
00:29:18Well, less than an hour ago,
00:29:20he laid $500 on my desk and gave me a long spiel
00:29:22about knowing that I was your lawyer
00:29:24and that you came to see me
00:29:26any time you wanted to get anybody other than Penn.
00:29:28Naturally, I told him that he got his numbers crossed
00:29:31and I knew absolutely nothing about buying a parole.
00:29:36Did that shut him up?
00:29:38For the moment.
00:29:40But he left me a note.
00:29:42But he left the money and suggested
00:29:44that I think it over.
00:29:46Well, anyway, here it is.
00:29:48Buy yourself that bracelet
00:29:50you've been talking so much about.
00:29:52Thanks.
00:29:55I don't know what to say, darling.
00:29:57I haven't mentioned our connections to a soul.
00:30:00Of course, the boys know
00:30:02that you do handle my legitimate legal matters, but...
00:30:04The important point is how Palmer
00:30:06or any one of them know about my connection
00:30:08with the parole board.
00:30:09It's dynamite.
00:30:11If one of them should talk out of turn,
00:30:13there's no telling what might happen.
00:30:15You don't need to tell me.
00:30:19I'll talk to Charlie Newton about it.
00:30:22He'll throw a scare into Palmer.
00:30:24He won't forget.
00:30:30Four aces and two.
00:30:35Harry Palmer just pulled a double cross on Jojo.
00:30:37Yeah?
00:30:39What's that got to do with you?
00:30:41That's my business.
00:30:43Jojo says she doesn't want any rough stuff.
00:30:45But I'm running the boys, not Jojo.
00:30:47Yeah, but Jojo just got Harry out.
00:30:49So what?
00:30:51You're just as good a collector as Harry ever was.
00:30:53I should say I am.
00:30:55You name it, we'll do it.
00:30:57Okay.
00:30:59Tell you what we'll do.
00:31:01I'll call Harry on the phone,
00:31:03tell him to call me back from the corner drugstore.
00:31:05When he rings up here, I'll tell him to skip it,
00:31:07that I changed my mind.
00:31:09Now, when he's walking back to his house...
00:31:21Hiya, Harry.
00:31:23Hiya, Blackie. What's cooking?
00:31:25You'll find out.
00:31:39The killing of Palmer completely upset my plans.
00:31:41As I had now lost my only link to tie in Jojo
00:31:43with the higher-ups in the parole conspiracy.
00:31:45Well, how's the leg today?
00:31:47Oh, much better, thank you. Look.
00:31:49Hey, take it easy.
00:31:51Okay.
00:31:53I'll take care of it.
00:31:55I'll take care of it.
00:31:57I'll take care of it.
00:31:59I'll take care of it.
00:32:01I'll take care of it.
00:32:03I'll take care of it.
00:32:05I'll take care of it.
00:32:07I'll take care of it.
00:32:10I'm a coffee lover.
00:32:12Oh, I see.
00:32:14Well, I'll come back for that later.
00:32:16All right, fine.
00:32:21Hunting around for...
00:32:23I'll delete that hunting around, make it...
00:32:26Fumbling about,
00:32:28fumbling about for a new lead,
00:32:30I looked up to grief-stricken and embittered Glenda,
00:32:34pretending to her that I wanted to avenge her husband's death.
00:32:36Pretending to her that I wanted to avenge her husband's murder,
00:32:38which had cost me $500.
00:32:41Well, I showed her the list of tenants
00:32:43occupying the fifth floor of the building
00:32:45to which Palmer and I had gone to,
00:32:48a man whose full name was Barney Rodescu,
00:32:52R-O-D-E-S-C-U,
00:32:55who was a lawyer and sort of a man about town.
00:32:59Well, I decided to find out
00:33:01if he was the contact between the two men.
00:33:02Well, I decided to find out
00:33:04if he was the contact between the crook on the parole board
00:33:07and Jojo Dumont.
00:33:13You know, in a way, Palmer getting bumped off like that
00:33:15kind of put me in a spot.
00:33:17How come?
00:33:19Well, we, uh, we had a little deal together.
00:33:21You see, I figured if Palmer just getting paroled like that,
00:33:23he'd know the ropes.
00:33:25Remember me telling you about a pal of mine, Monty Cooper?
00:33:28Well, it wasn't as tight as I'd seen that night, you know.
00:33:30Yeah, yeah.
00:33:32I think you were.
00:33:34You say, uh, Palmer was trying to help
00:33:36you get a parole for Cooper?
00:33:38Well, I didn't exactly say that,
00:33:40but that's the general idea.
00:33:42Go ahead, I can listen while I'm typing.
00:33:44Of course, you, uh,
00:33:46you know I had to pull a little job
00:33:48to get the money for Monty's parole.
00:33:50You mean the, uh, Ingersoll robbery?
00:33:52I don't know anybody named Ingersoll.
00:33:56No, but the point is, Jojo, I'd, uh,
00:33:58I'd like to get Monty out of the prison
00:34:00as fast as I can.
00:34:03You know,
00:34:05you should have come to me in the first place, Rick.
00:34:08You?
00:34:10Mm-hmm.
00:34:12I'm serious.
00:34:14I like to help my friends.
00:34:16Besides, I, uh,
00:34:18I have a lot of influence in the right places.
00:34:20Mm-hmm.
00:34:22Of course, we'll need cash.
00:34:24Yeah, I know, $2,000.
00:34:26Palmer told me.
00:34:28Did you, uh, did you give Palmer any money?
00:34:30Yeah.
00:34:32Yeah, I gave him $500.
00:34:34And for you,
00:34:36here's another $1,000.
00:34:38Thanks.
00:34:40I, uh,
00:34:42like to have a receipt.
00:34:44Oh, sure.
00:34:52Here's your receipt.
00:34:54Hey, you know, that's not bad.
00:34:56Of course, it's expensive at $1,000 a throw,
00:34:58but it's not bad.
00:35:00And, uh,
00:35:02Tony's paroled from prison.
00:35:05It's a deal.
00:35:09Well, I guess that about winds up what I have to say.
00:35:13From here on,
00:35:15my future's in your hands.
00:35:17All I ask is
00:35:19that you give me a break.
00:35:21You needn't worry about not getting a fair break
00:35:23from this parole board.
00:35:25All right, you may return to your duties,
00:35:27and you'll be informed of our decision later.
00:35:29Thank you. Thank you very much, sir.
00:35:32That man should be put away for life.
00:35:34He's an habitual criminal.
00:35:36Why should the state have to support this man for life?
00:35:38That's the wrong attitude. I agree with Mr. Perkins.
00:35:40I'm opposed.
00:35:42The man deserves a chance.
00:35:44Every man deserves a chance.
00:35:46Once again, we seem to be evenly divided,
00:35:48thus making it my duty to cast the deciding vote.
00:35:50And you vote for Cooper to be paroled?
00:35:52I do. Mr. Holliday, it's my privilege.
00:35:54But, Mr. Holliday, it's obvious...
00:35:56It's the chairman's privilege to have his own opinion.
00:35:58The majority votes in favor of Monty Cooper's parole.
00:35:59You'll be released in two weeks
00:36:01to report for work at the Ainslie Farm at Meadows.
00:36:03I move for adjournment.
00:36:08Because I couldn't understand
00:36:10why anyone would give a job
00:36:12to a multiple loser like Monty Cooper,
00:36:14I decided to check the county assessor's records
00:36:17to find out what I could about Vern Ainslie.
00:36:22From the beginning, I had suspected Ralph Holliday
00:36:25of accepting the bribe to put through the parole board.
00:36:27But with the information I had now obtained,
00:36:30I felt certain it was Rodesco
00:36:32who had offered the job on the farm to Monty Cooper.
00:36:35Suspecting the setup, however, was not enough.
00:36:38I still...
00:36:40That afternoon, I worked out a strategic plan.
00:36:41Hello.
00:36:43Commissioner,
00:36:45Commissioner, this is Hendricks.
00:36:47That's me.
00:36:49I'm sorry.
00:36:51You're going to be fired.
00:36:53I've got to go.
00:36:55I've got to go.
00:36:57I'm sorry.
00:36:59I've got to go.
00:37:01I've got to go.
00:37:03I'm sorry.
00:37:05I've got to go.
00:37:07I've got to go.
00:37:09I've got to go.
00:37:11right. Well yes naturally commissioner I'm going out to the Ainslie farm. Oh
00:37:18incidentally I told the boys at the past time club that I would meet Cooper out at
00:37:22the farm but commissioner this is just one thing and I hope you won't let me down
00:37:27on this you see unless Cooper is picked up at the prison gates when he's released
00:37:32if he should happen to come out of the Ainslie farm at the same time I'm there and
00:37:35get one good look at me well I'm afraid my career is Murdoch or Carson or Hendricks
00:37:41will come to a very sudden and painful end or you have nothing to worry about on
00:37:45that score Hendricks I've already notified four states of Cooper's impending parole
00:37:52they'll be right there to arrest him the minute he steps foot outside the prison
00:37:55gates fine commissioner I'll call you tomorrow afternoon I think by that time I
00:38:00should have this whole set up in the bag yes.
00:38:41Ainslie.
00:38:50You Ainslie what do you want looking for Monty Cooper. Monty Cooper is supposed to
00:38:57be working here well he ain't nobody here by the name of Cooper I look Ainslie I
00:39:01happen to know that Monty Cooper was paroled to work on this farm who told you
00:39:05that after all I'm a pal of his my name is Carson Rick Carson well I'm pleased to
00:39:14meet you Carson glad to meet a real pal of Monty's too you know confidentially I
00:39:20put up the dough to spring him yeah well I guess you'll be right glad to see each
00:39:25other again yeah only thing is I don't expect Cooper much before tomorrow you see
00:39:31there ain't no other bus coming this way before midnight tonight you don't know
00:39:35money very well do you there ain't no bus you'll take
00:39:38a taxi and when he gets here he'll ask me to pay for it. You're welcome to hang
00:39:43around if you want to I guess the boss won't care I thought you were on this place
00:39:48oh I sold out a couple of years ago to
00:39:50a fellow named Rodesco a young lawyer from town. Well tell me does this this
00:39:57Rodesco does he come here very often mostly weekends him and
00:40:01a lady friend they do a lot of riding by the way I'm expecting them this afternoon
00:40:08sometime you make yourself the home I got to get the horses ready up to you Carson
00:40:13yeah yeah I hadn't figured on Rodesco visiting the farm I realized his presence
00:40:21might have set my plan but I had to take the gamble so I waited until Ainsley had
00:40:27disappeared I had brought along an instrument which the commissioner of police
00:40:33had provided and taking advantage of Ainsley's absence I decided to make use of it.
00:40:57I quickly ascertained that no one else was near I fixed in my mind the details of the
00:41:13room and then found a suitable place in which to conceal the precious instrument.
00:41:18It was the latest type of sound recorder once set to operate it needed no further
00:41:30attention since it would automatically start when someone spoke and stop again when the
00:41:36voice concluded it could pick up voice frequencies within a radius of 50 feet
00:41:40and could record continuously for four hours hello get me Metropolitan 4 4 2 4 4
00:41:51hello hello Glenda Glenda this is Rick Carson oh yes Rick I think I know who's responsible
00:42:03for what happened to your husband you do who is it Rick don't ask any questions now because

00:46:58canter over the countryside oh let's relax for a little while later maybe
00:47:02huh do you think the fellows could push enough punch boards to raise say an extra
00:47:11$20,000 in the next few weeks they might by putting a little extra pressure on their
00:47:16customers then I think they should a powerful anti-racket committee is being organized to
00:47:22run us among others out of business and the little extra money wisely spent might help
00:47:28considerably I'll see the Charlie Newton starts him out on it Monday morning good
00:47:34in asking Glenda to send those telegrams to every member of the parole board I assume
00:47:41that only the one member who was mixed up in the parole conspiracy would know what was
00:47:45meant by the farm and the signature Barney oh just a dusk I had the keen satisfaction
00:47:51of knowing that my plan had worked I had sent those telegrams in the hope of tricking Ralph
00:47:56Holliday into exposing himself Holliday was driving that coupe but instead of trapping
00:48:03one member of the parole board I had caught two but Titus Jones arrived in the car with
00:48:08my primary suspect I wonder who that can be probably one of your eager beaver clients

00:50:54recording machine was doing its work but to make the record admissible as evidence in court I would

00:57:03help me I'll kill you right here on this bike
00:57:13Mrs. Palmer, what's the matter in there? This is Mr. Brown, the manager. Open the door and let him in. But be careful. Go on. Are you all right Mrs. Palmer?
00:57:38Thank heaven you're here. Are you all right Mrs. Palmer? Stick your hands up and keep going. Drop that gun. You're the manager of the pastime club. Get him out of here. Book him on suspicion of attempted murder. Yes commissioner. Take him out. Everything's all right Mrs. Palmer. Will you please get the lady a glass of water? Mrs. Palmer, I'm very anxious to get some information about Rick Carson.
00:58:07No, it's all right. He's working with us. Oh, thank you. Here you are. He said you were helping him. But we're worried that something may have happened. Have you heard from Carson lately? He telephoned me this afternoon from Meadows. Meadows? The Ainslie farm is located near Meadows. That's right. He mentioned the farm and the telegrams they sent for him. Captain, notify the sheriff's office in Meadows to see if Carson is at the Ainslie farm. Yes commissioner.
00:58:37Jojo's here. I wonder who that other car belongs to. Never saw it before. Say hello and show him you're okay. Then we'll take a run into town. Fair enough. Well, not to newt nor to a fanny, she's the treatment of Glenda Palmer by now.
00:59:07Well, we picked up Coombert. Here he is. Hiya gang. Well, where's that old son-of-a-gun Murdock or Carson, whatever he calls himself now? What's the matter Monty? Don't you recognize your old pal? You know I didn't at first, but I sure do now. You're the guy who shut it out with me and a pal up in Wisconsin. It was you who put a slug to it. You're a federal agent.
00:59:35That's right, I am a federal agent. And there's one thing they teach us and that's how to use a gun. And the first one that makes a move gets it. I warned you Mitchell. Anybody else? You see, the reason Cooper knew I was a federal man is because I once put him in prison. The very same prison that you very loyal citizens got him out of today. Looks like I'm gonna have to put him back in again. But this time I'm gonna give him a lot of company. I'm gonna put you all in with him.
01:00:04But right now, ladies and gentlemen, I'm afraid I have to leave you. But I'll make you a promise, I'll be back again. Nice work Ainsley, just in time. I heard the shot, I figured something was wrong. Shut up and follow me. Stop the party. Stop it, stop it. Put him in the chair. He'll be more comfortable here.
01:00:34Hey Carson, here's some water for you. Now speak. Alright Carson, who put you in our train? Well, I suppose we'll have to teach him how to speak. That's lesson number one. He's stubborn, he'll need more than that. Ready to talk yet? Hit him again.
01:01:05We'll make him talk. Why don't you shoot him and get it over with? Just a minute. We'll try once more. If he doesn't talk this time, he'll get a one-way ticket to the bottom of the river. Alright Carson, this is your last chance. Tell us just how much you know. You better talk fast and to the point.
01:01:26Sounds like police sirens. It is the police, what can we do? Don't let them find him here. Duke, Blackie, kid, take Cooper and Carson to the storeroom. Use the back way. Holliday and Jones, you better go along. Come on boys. Hurry up. Now, you and I will be taking care of Frank, Jojo. Alright. And remember, he was hurt in a hunting accident. Oh, shut up.
01:01:57Come on fellas. Alright, where do we go? In that room. Make it snappy boys, come on. There's no time to lose. Right in here.
01:02:05Quiet now. Lock it boys.
01:02:35Why don't you and Al go with me? The rest of you look those cars over and see if you can find anything out here.
01:02:52You'll soon feel better old man. What's the trouble here? My guest was hurt in a hunting accident. We called a doctor. Oh, well we're looking for a man named Carson. Carson? I don't know him.
01:03:14There was someone here earlier today, before you came home dear. His name was Carson. He said he was looking for a friend. Was his friend named Monty Cooper? That name doesn't mean anything to me either. He was just paroled from prison. He's supposed to report here for work. We haven't seen him. If you have no objections, we'll look through the house. Help yourself. Thank you. Let's look at him then.
01:03:37Jim, you go up there. Shut up you one people or I'll bust your mouth wide open. Thanks for your cooperation. I hope the doctor gets here soon. Goodnight. Goodnight.
01:04:07I hope that doesn't look right to me. Yeah, Monty Cooper's supposed to go to work out here and nobody seems to know anything about him. Kind of funny isn't it? Yeah. Keep him in there. We'll go around and see what the rest of the boys are doing.
01:04:22We haven't been in here yet. Open it up mister. Alright boys, look it over. It's kind of stuffy in here. Did you find anything? No sign of Cooper or Carson so far. Well, I'll make up Tara's safe.
01:04:52See, I told you there ain't nothing in here. Ah, that just about winds it up. Well, if Cooper shows up, I'll be glad to let you know. Okay, let's go men.
01:05:10Boy, was I sweating. That was a close one. I thought sure they had us. What's that? Hey! There's another room back there.
01:05:33Grab that man. Clear this stuff out. Take that cabinet away. In here! You stupid fool! Where's your brain? Shut up or I'll put a slug through you too. I'd like to do that myself. I didn't like their kisses when I saw them on the parole board.
01:05:56Here they are, Sarge. Good. Mike, take the gas gun. Brad, you take this. Pick up those people in the house. Okay, Sarge. Alright, you fellas in there. Come out with your hands up. If you want us covered, you'll have to come in and get us. Now listen to me. If you don't come out, we're going to give you a dose of gas. You've got just 30 seconds to make up your mind. Let's give up, boys. We can't beat them.
01:06:19Please, please don't fight. They've got gas and I've got sinus trouble. That'll cure it. They're too many for us, Vigili. Yeah, why get ourselves killed? What's the matter with you guys? You all yellin'? No, but we're not all fools either. Come out one at a time with your hands up. I'll count to five. If you aren't out by then, we'll open up on you. One, two, three, four.
01:06:46Alright, you get going. Come on, get going, get going. Move along, come on. Come on, step out of there. Come on, move along, move along. Keep those hands up. Let's see if there's anyone else in there. Right. Mr. Hendricks? Who shot you? Duke Vigili. We'd better call an ambulance. He's badly hurt. Give me a hand here. I can't make it.
01:07:16Sure.
01:07:35Just a minute.
01:07:38Well, Duke, I told you I'd see you again. And the next time I see you, you're gonna be a very old man.
01:07:55Oh, yes. Getting along real fine. Another week or so, I'll be able to go out dancing again. That's wonderful. Here you are, Mr. Hendricks. Oh, thank you, Mary. Oh, Mary's my favorite nurse. I can believe that.
01:08:08If it wasn't for her, I'd probably still be lying in bed. Thank you, Mr. Hendricks. God bless you. Well, here's my completed report, Mr. Whitmore. It took quite a long time to finish it, but I hope it accomplishes what the governor desired.
01:08:22Well, I'm sure it will be, Carson. I mean, Murdoch. You mean Hendricks. That's right.
