We all know that the film is inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic novel Great Expectations and thus the story takes the same route however, book ki tarah ye film film London mein nahi, Kashmir mein based hai but yes some portions have been shot in London.
Fitoor revolves around a young boy Noor, from a humble background, who gets besotted by a little girl Firdaus, the moment he lays his eyes upon her. Firdaus is the daughter of the eccentric Begum hazrat, who lives a secluded life, in her palace. Begum hires Noor to take care of her horses aur isliye bhi taki Firdaus ka dil laga rahey but she is quick to advise him ki kahin dil mat laga lena.
When Firdaus leaves for London without telling Noor he is left heart broken. Lekin jaise jaise waqt beetata hai Firdaus ke liye Noor ka fitoor badhta hi jaata hai. Noor, who is an artist, is offered a scholarship by an anonymous benefactor aur shikara chalane wala ladhka Delhi pahunch jaata, jahan kismet usey ek baar fir Firdaus se milati hai.
However, over the years things have changed. Firdaus is all set to settle down with a Pakistani Minister Bilal, jisey wo London mein mili hoti hai. Will the haughty and rich Firdaus accept her childhood admirer? How will Noor react to her engagement? Who is Noor’s secret benefactor? And why is the begum so bitter? You probably may be knowing the answers to these questions if you have read the book but if you haven’t, you’ll have to watch the movie.
I have read the book and I have to say that Abhishek has done full justice to the novel. The film is poignant, melodramatic and enigmatic and is a must watch for all you die-hard romantics.
Aditya Roy Kapoor plays Noor aur apne role ko unhone bakhubhi nibhaya hai. Right from his performance as the mesmerized lover to his look he has got everything right. Katrina is fine jab tak unhe sirf hasna aur naachna ho but the moment a performance oriented-scene arrives she fails to live up to it. Katrina is looking much older to Aditya and thus they fail to look convincing as a pair.
Tabu is the real star of the film and her Begum is so melancholous, miserable and manipulative, that viewers are bound to get mesmerized. The kids who have essayed the role of young Noor and Firdaus have also done a terrific job. Rahul Bhatt,ho has played Bilal, too is good in his role.
Abhishek Kapoor has come up with a great adaptation and the film is 2 hours 11 minutes of absolute cinematic brilliance. Every frame of the intense romance is so beautifully shot that it seems like a spectacular painting, mind you I’m saying every scene and that in itself is a great achievement. The film has a very old world charm and Abhishek has successfully captured the essence of the book and the beauty of Kashmir.
The music of the film will tug at you hearstring and especiall pashmina and title track. Film mein gaano ko khubsoorti se piroya gaya hai aur wo screenplay ko aur bhi behtar bana detey hai.
All in all Fitoor is a must watch if you love everything romantic, if you have ever loved and lost or if you just are an admirer of good films. I’ll give this film a rating of 4 stars. So this Valentines Day make sure you enjoy this beauty with your sweetheart.
