GALLATIN, TENNESSEE — Gallatin Police released graphic surveillance footage of an officer shooting a woman wielding an ax.
Laronda Sweatt, 40, reportedly had attacked a Sumner County sheriff's deputy with an ax. The video, captured from a camera on responding officer James Spray's vest and the dash cam of another officer's vehicle, shows the dramatic moment Spray shot the woman down on April 6.
According to police, Gallatin officers responded to a call for assistance from the Sumner County Sheriff's Department after Sweatt had stabbed a deputy while being served an eviction warrant at her home on the 200 block of Chaffin Court just off Airport Road. Upon arrival, Spray met Sweatt in the street, where she advanced on the officer despite being told multiple times to "get on the ground."
After being backed into another police vehicle, Spray fired two rounds, striking the woman both times.
Sweat was provided immediate medical treatment, but later died at Sumner Regional Medical Center.
The injured deputy was treated at Skyline Medical Center and later released. Spray was placed on administrative leave as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident.
According to a report by the Tennessean, Sweatt suffered from bipolar disorder and was on medication. She was unemployed and lived on disability payments.
