ZIONSVILLE, INDIANA — A man killed his 31-year-old niece and her 4-year-old son before committing suicide, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Wabash College employee Lucius Oliver Hamilton III, 61, shot and killed Katherine Giehll and her son Raymond Peter Giehll IV on her 31st birthday in her home on 6800 Old Hunt Club Road in Zionsville, Indiana.
Giehll had sent her husband, Raymond Giehll III, a text that her uncle was at their home. After Raymond was unable to make contact with Katherine, he headed home and found his wife and son dead. He called 911. Police arrived around 9 a.m. Hamilton was not on the property at the time.
"In my 32 years of law enforcement I have never witnessed a crime so heinous and heartbreaking," Nielsen said in a statement on the Boone County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page as authorities searched for Hamilton.
The Boone County Coroner's Office said Katherine Giehll suffered three gunshot wounds and her son Raymond Giehll IV suffered one gunshot wound.
Police reviewed home security camera footage and made a positive identification on Hamilton. The manhunt involved local authorities as well as the US Marshall and FBI.
They proceeded to check his place of work, but found out while he was on campus, he had already left. Wabash College was then put on lockdown.
Around 1 p.m., authorities were able to track him down at the Hilton Hotel and Suites in downtown Indianapolis. Upon knocking on the door, SWAT officers reported two shots fired. After several more attempts to contact Hamilton verbally, they entered the room. Hamilton was found deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Later that afternoon, Boone County Sheriff's Office released a statement via Facebook stating, "Our preliminary investigation leads us to believe that the motive for this double homicide was strictly for financial gain, from a family trust. The details of the trust are still under investigation but at this time investigators believe there is no other motive."
