USGS Shares Image Of Lava Flow That Grew Into An Unusual Cone Shape

A recent Facebook post by the U.S. Geological Survey shows the formation of a cone-shaped hornito that has arisen along the Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii.

Lava flows can result in unusual formations including one that is cone-shaped. 

They are called “hornitos” which is Spanish for “little oven.” 

The U.S. Geological Survey recently posted about one such structure which has arisen over a lava tube on the Hawaiian volcano known as Kīlauea.
