Researchers have learned one significant factor in a route instruction’s success or failure is how the information is ordered.

Location tips that mentioned a landmark first and the specific destination later proved far more effective than those given in the reverse. 

The team observed this through experiments involving volunteers and the book ‘Where’s Wally’, an international version of ‘Where’s Waldo.’ 

Participants were asked to pick one figure from the dizzying array and advise on how to best find it.
