NASA says 99.9 percent chance of large earthquake in LA in the next few years

LOS ANGELES — According to a study published in early October by NASA'S Jet Propulsion Laboratory, there's a 99.9 percent chance that Los Angeles will experience a serious earthquake some time in the next few years.

Using GPS and radar to calculate the probability of earthquakes in Southern California, NASA geophysicists say that within 60-miles from the large March 28, 2014 La Habra quake site, there is a 99 percent chance that an earthquake measuring 5.0 magnitude or greater will occur in the next three years. According to their study, there is also a 35 percent chance that a 6.3 magnitude quake will occur in the area in the same time frame.

The scientists say that chances are high for a fairly strong earthquake on or near two faults in Los Angeles County: the right-lateral strike-slip Whittier fault and the Puente Hills thrust fault. The two faults are responsible for the La Habra quake, which hit a magnitude of 5.1 and caused considerable damage in San Gabriel Valley. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says that the La Habra quake caused "a surprising amount of damage" to local homes and businesses.

According to CBS Los Angeles, seismologists at the U.S. Geological Survey have questioned these high probabilities and some scientists caution against these earthquake prediction claims that could incite "fear and confusion."
