The Kcho Studio in the Havana suburb of Romerillo was founded by Cuban artist Alexis Leyva. This painter and creator of art installations, known throughout Cuba as “Kcho,” talks to Cristina Escobedo about the presence of Fidel Castro at the inauguration of the studio. Why did he make this rare appearance? “Maybe because a place like this shows what the Revolution is all about,” says Kcho. He talks about an artist’s social responsibility, the impact of hurricanes on his activist art, and the scores of people reflected in his work. Will Cuba now be re-colonized by the United States? “That depends on us,” he says. teleSUR
