A recently published study documents a population of seagulls in Namibia that blind young Cape fur seals by plucking out their eyes before eating them.
Seagulls may just seem like pests at the beach, but they are actually highly adaptive birds that have developed a distinct way to attack prey.
According to a recently published study, a species called the kelp gull plucks out the eyeballs of young Cape fur seals.
The lead author, Austin Gallagher of Carleton University, notes, “A blind seal cannot forage, cannot find mom, and will get attacked by other gulls.”
