Modernist approach needed for democratic Islam

Panelist Professor Nader Hashemi spoke about the challenges of advancing democracy in Muslim societies at a forum this evening on Islamism, Post-Islamism and Civil Islam.
He said that if there is no alternative progressive religious leaders or authority then anti democratic interpretations of Islam will sway people with their claims to speak for the religion.
