Nicaragua: Sex Workers Granted Rights

Nicaragua will now officially recognize sex workers, a move that was announced on June 2, International Sex Workers Day. The measure aims to provide support for workers who are often the victims of abuse and neglect. Meanwhile, in Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama, activists are also promoting laws that would recognize sex workers, and in Guatemala there is a move to create a sex workers union. Those who backed the law in Nicaragua say that locking up those who work in the sex industry just doesn’t make sense. The Vice President of the Supreme Court Marvin Aguilar said: “We are the only country in the world that treats sex workers as judicial facilitators, the only country in the world that doesn’t try to arrest them, where the activity isn’t criminalized.
