Based on images of Mars taken last year by the Mars Express orbiter, astronomers with the European Space Agency believe they have identified an area of two overlapping craters that is likely the remnants of an ancient supervolcano eruption.

The European Space Agency has released images of Mars that could indicate the existence of a supervolcano that erupted perhaps millions or billions of years ago.
Taken by the Mars Express orbiter on November 26, 2014, they show two overlapping craters that measure nearly 25 miles at the widest point and around 1 mile below surface level at its deepest.
