Homeless man starved to the point of eating souvenirs in Yamagata, Japan

A starving unemployed old man in Japan was nabbed this past Monday morning at a souvenir shop close to the waiting room of Yamagata Station, on suspicion of shoplifting four mobile phone charms.

The 63-year-old suspect was charged with stealing three charms shaped like Dadacha-mame, green soybeans grown in Yamagata, as well as one charm modelled on Yokan- a thick jellied Japanese dessert, all of which amounted to 2,400 Yen (US$ 24).

When the hungry old man seated himself in the waiting room on the point of eating the charms, a station attendant shouted, "What the hell are you doing?". Then, the suspect admitted he stole them because he was flat broke and had nothing to eat. He was starving to the point that he thought those charms were sweets that could satisfy his hunger.

According to the clerk, the hungry suspect had been in and out the waiting room for the last two weeks. He was most recently seen seated in the waiting room from early morning until night.
