The former editor of Hong Kong's influential Ming Pao newspaper was severely injured in a stabbing attack on Wednesday.

According to police, Kevin Lau had left his car after parking it in Sai Wan Ho at around 10:20 a.m. when two assailants on a motorcycle approached him. One stabbed him with a knife multiple times. The pair then fled the scene.

Still conscious after the attack, Lau called the police himself and was admitted to the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.

During a press briefing, doctors said Lau was stabbed six times. He sustained one wound to his back and another wound to his shoulder. The back wound was more severe, at 16 centimetres long. According to Tang Chung-ngai, the chief of service at the the surgery department, the wound extended from his back through to his left chest cavity, severing "all the muscles" in between. The lung tissues and major blood vessels were undamaged.

The assailants also stabbed both of his legs twice, damaging the nerves in his thighs. The deepest leg wound was measured at 15 centimetres. It is not ascertained whether Lau will lose his walking ability, but he is not in life danger.

Lau was ousted from his position as chief editor in January and replaced by Chong Tien-siong, the former chief editor of Malaysia's Nanyang Siang Pau, sparking citywide protests over press freedom. Many believe Lau's ouster was part of Beijing's push to silence media opposition in Hong Kong.
