A group of at least 10 militants attacked Pakistan's major airport late on Sunday (June 8), leading to an extended firefight with security forces and killing at least twelve people.

The militants, said to be wearing security uniforms and strapped with explosives, gunned their way into a terminal at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi at around 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Another group of attackers next blasted their way through cargo gates at Jinnah International Airport's old terminal and made for a plane on the runway. Security forces cornered four terrorists near a plane while they were trying to hijack a vehicle used by the Civil Aviation Authority, according to officials. In an exchange of fire that ensued, explosives strapped to one of the gunmen went off after getting shot. At least six officers and airport staff and six attackers were killed in the clashes.

Reports say that at least two planes had caught fire following the explosion. Shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday, the chief spokesperson for the army stated that all surviving terrorists have been contained in one area.

It was unclear who was behind the attack, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility, though initial suspicion fell on the Pakistani Taliban or one of its splinter groups.
