The second weekend of World Cup action began with another shock as Group D's most underrated team Costa Rica earned a second deserved victory."

Bryan Ruiz scored as Costa Rica triumphed 1-0 over Italy in Recife.

Meanwhile, France continued its strong start with a thumping 5-2 win over the Swiss.
In form striker Karim Benzema missed a first-half penalty, but netted in the second half to become joint top scorer on three goals.

Saturday's action saw Argentina struggle to overcome a spirited and well-organized Iran.

Lionel Messi left it late to score the winner, netting with a curling shot to send Argentina through to the last sixteen and break Iranian hearts.

While Miroslav Klose got closer to becoming to the all-time top scorer in World Cups with a goal in Germany's 2-2 draw with Ghana.

The 36-year old netted with his first touch after coming on as a substitute to rescue a point for Germany against the Africans and equal Ronaldo's tally of 15 world cup goals.

Sunday's action saw Algeria surprise with three first-half goals against a woeful South Korean side in their 4-2 victory, handing the North African side its first World Cup win since 1982.

And finally substitute Silvestre Varela's stoppage time earned Portugal a 2-2 draw with the US in their Group G clash, earning superstar Ronaldo a reprieve when it looked like he would be heading home.
