Students returned and graduated six years after school destroyed in a typhoon disaster

For these three small town sixth graders in central Taiwan, graduating from their own school is something they never thought would have happened. Six years ago, their school was destroyed by Typhoon Sinlaku, leaving the students and school faculty with nowhere to go. They've been having school lessons at different places, hopping from town offices to a tourist center.
The reconstruction of the school was eventually complete this February. Although there were only three graduates this year, town residents came together to celebrate their graduation with a banquet.
The school was saved from the county government's hand as the authorities had initially given up rebuilding it. After some vigorous advocacy efforts launched by the local residents, they were able to persuade the government into keeping the elementary school and turn it into a unique school that focuses on teaching local ecological knowledge.
Sixteen students are currently enrolled in the newly rebuilt school.
