Peru: Congress Approves Humala's Choice for PM

A political crisis was avoided in Peru when at midnight the country's Congress approved President Ollanta Humala's choice for prime minister, giving Pedro Cateriano a vote of confidence. The previous prime minister Ana Jara and presidential cabinet had resigned in the wake of a domestic espionage scandal. Left-wing legislators voted against Cateriano's appointment, citing differences with the government's oil privatization policies and repression against indigenous activists fighting foreign mining projects.
