Arrival of Migrants at Sicilian Port Highlights Abuses

At the Sicilian port of Trapani, an Italian vessel unloaded 586 migrants recovered from three barely seaworthy boats. Their arrival highlighted the abuses and dangers faced by thousands who try to cross the Mediterranean daily from Africa or other points. Since the year 2000, almost 20,000 people have died during their journey. International groups have accused the European Union of putting thousands of migrants at risk by scrapping migrant rescue operations and replacing them with security patrols. The problem is compounded by the rise in Europe of far right, racist anti-immigrant groups. On the other hand the Greek government is freeing scores of undocumented immigrants from detention centers. teleSUR
