Hong Kong violence video: Police in full riot gear caught on camera attacking students, protesters

The violence in Hong Kong continues to escalate as police officers attacked student protesters with batons. Twenty-three protesters were sent to hospital due to injuries.

Peter, a university sophomore, explains how he was at the front of the protesters, almost toe to toe with the line of police officers. When the police began swinging batons the students were only able to use their umbrellas as shields, which provided little protection against the hail of baton strikes. Peter explains how he dropped his umbrella and attempted to shield his face and head with his hands, as he turned away from the police he was struck on his temple.

Another protester, Terry, a computer programmer, says that he was pushed to the ground by the combined mass of other protesters and police, as he regained footing another police officer smashed him in the head with a baton, dropping him to the ground again. Terry says he was then hit another time in the head and several times in the back before being able to escape and eventually making it to hospital.

Voices were heard to be calling out from the police line, telling officers to continue hitting the protesters and to aim for their heads. Students could only cower behind umbrellas that were easily torn and ripped from their hands as the baton strikes rained down.

Mr. Liang, who works as a caterer, said that people all around him were being beaten. He attempted to help an injured protester to safety away from the police, when an officer appeared beside them and began to hit him in the head with his baton. Mr. Liang refused to let go of the other injured protester, using his one free hand to protect his head as he dragged the young man away from the thick of the violence.

Five police officers were injured in the chaos. The chief of police insisted that police were ordered to maintain a safe distance from the protesters, despite that fact that the police were recorded on video knocking down crowd control gates and advancing on the protesters until they had pushed them off the road and onto the sidewalks. The police chief admitted that police batons were used, but, he claims, only in extreme cases and even then to only hit an individual’s arms and legs, NEVER at their face or head.
