The Umbrella Revolution powers on... as pro-democracy protesters defend their position on the streets.

Police arrested 80 protesters in the clashes, after several thousand demonstrators erected street barricades in the area.

They say they're angry at an excessive use of police force in an earlier clearing of a protest hotspot in Mong Kok.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LEGISLATOR AND CHAIRMAN OF 'PEOPLE POWER', ALBERT CHAN, SAYING:

"Well the people, the protesters are very peaceful, they didn't use any violence at all. They just stand in line to face the police. But once the police use pepper spray or use the new material (CS spray), you know, lots of people are hurt today."

The district of Mong Kok has seen some of the most violent confrontations in the two-month long pro-democracy movement, with demonstrators calling for a free election when Hong Kong picks a new leader in 2017.
