Cop-killer Eric Frein manhunt ends, ‘survivalist’ found hiding in abandoned airport hangar

Eric Frein, who was accused of shooting two state troopers in Pennsylvania on Sept. 12, has been found and captured in an abandoned airport hangar in the Pocono Mountain area Thursday night. Corporal Bryon Dickson was killed in the shooting ambush, while Alex Douglass was critically injured, and has since been released from hospital.

Frein’s capture comes after a 48-day manhunt for the suspect, whose has been described as an excellent marksman and a survivalist familiar with the mountain range area near where his parents live.

Authorities first linked Frein to the shooting three days after the incident, when a man walking his dog came across Frein’s car that was half submerged in a swamp few miles from the shooting scene. Inside, officials found shell casings, Frein’s driver’s license, camouflage face paint, two empty rifle cases and military gear.

Officials also monitored a call Frein made from his cell phone to his parents’ home, tracing the call to a location about 3 miles away. Authorities said they had spotted Frein several times throughout the 7-week search, but he was always able to evade capture in the rugged terrain.

During the hunt, police came across several items they believe belonged to Frein, including two functional pipe bombs, empty packs of Serbian cigarettes, soiled diapers, an AK-47-style assault rifle, ammunition and a journal.

A U.S. Army manual called “Sniper Training and Employment” was also found in Frein’s bedroom at his parents’ home.

Reports say law enforcement found Frein in an airport hangar at the former Birchwood Resort in the Pocono Mountains, roughly 20 miles southwest of where the initial shootings took place. He was reportedly armed with two guns, but officials said he surrendered peacefully and was arrested without incident.
