Heroes: Dallas workers rescue man from sinking truck
Two City of Dallas workers are being hailed as heroes after jumping into a creek to rescue a colleague who lost control of his truck.
Dallas Water Utilities workers Raul Alamillo Jr. and Brent English jumped into action after a white pickup truck ended up in White Rock Creek on Tuesday morning.
The two men were en route to a job when they noticed the truck with its brake lights flashing half submerged in the creek, according to Alamillo’s sister Janette Monreal.
“He was shocked at first, but he said it was his instinct,” Monreal said. “He had to do it; It was, ‘Pull over and hurry up and get him out!”
‘They were trying to break the glass,” Monreal said. “They were looking for tools behind the truck to open, break the window, for somebody else who could help him get to the side so they could pull him out.”
The man in the truck was alert, but stuck in water up to his neck. The City of Dallas said the Equipment Services driver lost control of the vehicle while experiencing medical complications.
The men then used a pocket knife to cut the driver’s seat belt off. Once the driver side door was open, the rescuers jumped in the water to pull the man out of the cab of the truck.
The driver was taken to the hospital where he is in stable condition. It took several hours to pull the truck out from the creek.
The Dallas city manager is commending Alamillo and English for going above and beyond the call of duty to save a life.
