Google Project Loon: internet giant to test Wi-Fi balloons in Australia

Google is planning to conduct the latest test of its ambitious high-altitude balloons, which provide internet access to remote areas, in Australia.

The test, which will start in Australia in December, comes after semi-successful trials in New Zealand, Brazil and the United States.

Google is teaming up with a local provider of mobile phones, mobile devices, home phones and broadband internet.

The technology is part of Google’s so-called project Loon, which is especially attractive for developing countries who may be able to obtain internet access without having to invest in more expensive underground fibre cabling.

Project Loon balloons float 12 miles above ground. A specialized internet antenna on the ground sends up signals to the balloon, which are then sent from the balloon to other nearby balloons, creating a network in the stratosphere.

The signal then reaches a ground station connected to a local internet provider, which next provides internet connection throughout the balloons’ network, covering an area larger than 600 square miles per balloon.

The test in Australia will involve 20 balloons. Google’s long-term plan is to create a network of balloons that encircle the globe and provide connections to the two-thirds of the world without a stable wired connection.
