A nearly 5-minute-long video of an Indian doctor removing a whole lot of maggots from some patient’s ear has started to go viral.

An unidentified young man visited a doctor in Faizabad, India complaining of a persistent buzzing in his ear back in May.

Dr. Vikram Yadav discovered the patient was suffering from aural myiasis, a condition where fly larvae infests a person’s nose or ears. While removing the maggots from the man’s ear, Dr. Yadav was kind enough to record too.

Aural myiasis is fairly common in tropical and subtropical regions according to Yahoo News Canada. It usually affects children under 10 or the elderly. The larvae feed off of the flesh in the patient’s inner ear. In extreme cases, if left untreated, the maggots could eventually burrow into the brain and kill the patient.

Yadav suggests preventative measures if you notice a lot of house flies before you go to sleep. He recommends putting some cloth over your face so the flies can’t enter any orifices and lay their eggs.
