Chinese man kidnaps woman off street to avoid family grilling about failure to wed

Recent studies have shown that many young people living in China suffer from rising anxiety and depression before the the Lunar New Year holiday. Most of this is brought on by family pressure and the dread of facing your parents and all those nagging questions.

Many are now volunteering to work overtime during the holiday and more than one online manual has been written about how to dodge, avoid, or deter those annoying questions from nosey relatives.

The most common one being: Why aren’t you married yet?

But one man in Liaoning really let the pressure get to him.

The 32-year-old man, nicknamed A-Liu, decided the month prior to the long holiday that he would kidnap himself a bride. He even prepared a sackcloth bag and 10 feet of rope as a wedding gift for his new ‘bride’.

Five days before the start of the New Year holiday, A-Liu accosted a 24-year-old woman on the street. He muffled her screams and dragged her into an empty lot nearby. After tying her up, A-Liu then spent nearly 3 hours attempting to convince her to marry him, explaining that he was in his prime, his parents had bought him a house, and he was gainfully employed.

The woman was supposed to be meeting her boyfriend and when she failed to show up he called the police who studied CCTV footage. They found footage of the attack and police eventually located the kidnapper and his reluctant would-be-bride.

A-Liu explained he was desperate to bring home a bride. He’d gone on multiple blind dates but none of them had panned out--probably because they could smell the desperation--and finally decided kidnapping was the only way he would convince a woman to marry him.

Talk about sweeping a woman off her feet.
