Bus crash in South America: Driver fatigue kills 11 in Venezuela as driver falls asleep

At least 11 people were killed when a bus drove into a ravine on Venezuela's Central Sunday morning. Drive fatigue is being blamed.

The Guantar Valley Express public bus was en route from Puerto la Cruz to Maracay, when the bus driver, identified as Orangel Gómez, allegedly fell asleep and lost control of the bus, according to Dina German, the Transit commissioner of the Bolivarian National Police.

The bus then plunged into a ravine and came to rest in lake near a dam in the town of Zuata. Eleven people, including the driver, are confirmed to have died. Another 36 were injured and taken to hospital in La Victoria.

Another bus crashed into a tree along the same road in June, killing 20 people and injuring at least ten others.
