Leg severed in car accident: UPS man's leg cut off by teen driver

A UPS driver was struck by a car while unloading boxes in Staten Island on Monday. 40-year-old Thomas Ryan was unloading boxes in front of 2044 Hylan Boulevard when a driver in a Toyota Camry was forced to swerve to avoid a pedestrian.

The teen driver instead pinned Ryan against the back of his truck. The driver reversed to free Ryan, who was horrified to discover one leg had been severed in the impact, and the other broken.

The Camry's bumper pinched his calf just below the knee, cleaving off Ryan's leg.

The driver stayed on a scene and a quick thinking samaritan made a tourniquet from his shirt. Police said no charges will be filed.

Thomas Ryan has two children, both under 10 years old. He's currently in serious condition in the trauma unit at Bellevue Hospital.
