Cuba’s former leader, Fidel Castro, has been seen in public by the public for the first time in 14 months, local media reports.

Newly-released photos appear to show the leader greeting a group of Venezuelans, which was visiting a school in the capital, Havana.

The encounter is said to have been unplanned.

State-run television network Cubavision released the pictures on Saturday (April 4), but reported the meeting took place the previous Monday (March 30).

Castro’s prolonged absence had led to rumours he was terminally ill or may even have died.
