US Federal Reserve set to discuss interest rate rise

How will the Federal Reserve act? That’s a question which has led to speculation that a rate hike by the US central bank is on its way later this year.

Its meeting on Wednesday is expected to pave the way for the first rise in nearly a decade. Can the recovery in America hold up against collapsing oil prices and a soaring dollar?

The guessing game is on with two distinct opinions as to when the rise will come.

“The traders are still sort of looking at September for, “lift off”. If you talk to Wall Street economists, those who sort of play a little closer attention to what these Fed policy makers are saying they are looking a little more to June,” explained Jonathan Spicer, Reuters Fed correspondent

The Fed’s latest policy meeting is expected to discard a previous pledge to remain “patient”. A number of officials have publicly endorsed that putting investors on notice the hike could come any time from June onward.

The statement from its latest policy meeting is expected early
