O.Delcourt: "I have tried to create an atmosphere of Isabella's life, mysteriously broken..."
Isabella Clarke, wife of John Alexander Macdonald, who became the first Prime Minister of Canada. Like John, Isabella was born in Scotland. She was Macdonald's first half-cousin and they first met when Macdonald visited Great Britain in 1841. Isabella took sick about two years after her marriage. She never recovered her health and from 1845 until 1857 when she died, she was rarely well. It is not known for sure what caused her illness, but she suffered from head pains and often had a bad cough. There were days when she was so tired and in so much pain that she could not get out of bed.
Macdonald decided to find somewhere else for Isabella to live, where it was quiet and away from the dirt and noise of downtown. The place he chose was Bellevue House. The air was clean. It was a restful place for Isabella to try to recover her health.
Bellevue House was a pleasant place to live, particularly in the summertime when the trees were in leaf, the flowers blooming and the kitchen garden producing fresh vegetables for the dinner table. ... From :http://www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/on/bellevue/natcul/natcul1_e.asp#husband
