Such is the case with a diving club that happened upon a priceless stash of gold coins while on an underwater excursion off of Israel’s Mediterranean coast.
While exploring the ancient seabed beneath the harbor of Caesarea they picked up a coin they thought was a worthless game piece.
Closer inspection revealed that it was the real thing.
The group collected a few of them, returned to shore, and showed them to the club director.
According to antiquities authorities in Israel, the trove they came from is the largest ever discovered in the country.
It’s comprised of approximately 2 thousand pieces that date back about a thousand years.
