http://www.afmte.org/ Janet R. Kahn, PhD, NCTMB holds a B.A. in Psychology from Antioch College, an Ed.M. from Harvard Graduate School of Education, a Ph.D. in Sociology from Brandeis University and a diploma from the Potomac Massage Training Institute.
Dr. Janet Kahn is a massage therapist, a research scientist, and a health policy analyst. Kahn has served the massage community as President of the Massage Therapy Foundation (VP 1993-1996, President 1996-2000), Research Director of the Massage Therapy Research Consortium (2003-2008), and author of Research Matters in Massage Magazine, the first regular column on research and massage. Kahn served as Executive Director of the Integrated Healthcare Policy Consortium from 2005-2011, and is now Senior Policy Advisor to the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, and trustee of Maryland University of Integrative Health.
A respected thought leader in the field of integrative health care, Kahn was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Advisory Board on Prevention, Health Promotion and Integrative and Public Health; has testified before the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs about avoiding dangerous patterns of overmedication (April 2014); and served NIH as a member of the National Advisory Council on Complementary and Alternative Medicine for 7 years. She has presented on integrative healthcare at the Institute of Medicine Summit and to White House economic advisors.
Kahn has always maintained a private practice in therapeutic massage and somatic awareness (1983-present), and an active research career. With William Collinge she developed Mission Reconnect, a program offering instruction inmind-body techniques and partner massage to Veterans and their partners, currently in the field. Kahn and Collinge also developed, with Tracy Walton, Touch, Caring and Cancer, an award winning media-based program through which caregivers of people with cancer learn how to deliver safe touch and massage.
