FRANCE LAUNCHES WEBSITE TO COUNTER JIHADIST PROPAGANDA
The French government launched an online platform Wednesday January 28 to counter jihadist propaganda. The Stop Jihadism website`s target audience is families and friends of young people at risk of radicalization, young people themselves, and the wider public. It borrows the same kind of visual codes normally employed by Islamist terrorists to quash the arguments used by cyber recruiters.
The website opens with a hard-hitting video, deciphering jihadist propaganda, and countering calls to go and fight alongside extremists. The video shows popular jihadist groups on social media and an anonymous invite to join the terrorists, and then goes to explain the difference between what the jihadists say about joining them and what the reality is. They tell you for example you will be fighting for a just cause in Syria and Iraq, the message in French says but in reality you will find hell on earth, and you`ll die alone, far from home…
And the French government`s platform does more than just break down jihadist propaganda. It is split into four sections, all featuring short videos to teach web users more about the terrorist threat, the government's response, how to debunk jihadist propaganda and how French people can join together against the threat.
