Thousands in Berlin greet the new year with a morning run

Thousands of runners pound the pavement in Berlin, greeting the new year with a run around the Brandenburg Gate.

Many say the annual run is a chance to wipe the slate clean after a long night of partying and hangovers.

(SOUNDBITE) (German) RUNNER ASTRID MAY SAYING:

"It is doable on January 1. It is a must. In order to freshen up and not just lounge on the couch."

(SOUNDBITE) (German) RUNNER JENNY BENDER SAYING:

"If we are in Berlin, we do it every year. Just to act on the New Year's resolutions from the start of the year. Get the little butter behind off of the couch and onto the streets on Berlin - from the very first day on."

This year the event was dedicated to Berlin's bid to host the Olympics in 2024.

More than 4000 people joined the 4 km run - with the best intentions of sticking to their New Year's resolutions.
