Hundreds of thousands greet new pope in Vatican
An overflow crowd of more than 150,000 people packed St. Peter's Square to catch a glimpse of the new Pope.
After leading a simple mass in a tiny Vatican parish church Pope Francis then read out his first Angelus blessing from the papal apartments.
"I send cordial greetings to all pilgrims," he said. "I am asking you to continue to pray for me."
The address drew people from around the world, including Argentina, the pope's home country.
Many were moved to tears during the address by Francis, the first non-European pope in 1,300 years.
"He has deeply moved us," said this Italian pilgrim.

"Amazing, amazing to be here. We watched it on TV Wednesday and Ireland and it's St. Patrick's Day today, a very special occasion for us."
In his Angelus the pontiff called for more forgiveness and mercy so as to make "the world less cold and more just" he said.
