Cadillac plans to install a new type of rearview mirror that has a built in video screen inside 2016 CT6 models.

Cadillac is working on a new rearview mirror that will make it possible for drivers to fully scan their surroundings without worrying about things like obstructions and blind spots.

The company plans to install the mirrors, which have a built-in video screen, inside 2016 Cadillac CT6 models. According to a press release, the ‘streaming video mirror’ makes the field of vision four times greater than regular car mirrors.

The executive chief engineer of the Cadillac CT6, Travis Hester, compared the clear driving experience to cruising in a convertible with the top down.

He explained “In addition to the increased field of view, the technology eliminates any rear seat, rear pillar or passenger obstructions, allowing the driver an unimpeded view of the lanes behind and traditional blind-spots.”

The camera’s video feed greatly reduces glare when sun is an issue, and also gives a clear image in darker driving conditions due to a high dynamic range.

The high definition camera contains a hydrophobic coating which sheds water, meaning rainy and snowy weather won’t impact the crisp view.
