Obama says Sony decision to pull movie was "mistake"

STORY: U.S. President Barack Obama said it was a "mistake" for Sony Pictures to cancel the release of its movie "The Interview" and that he wished Sony had "talked" with him first before pulling the film.

"We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States," Obama told reporters at the White House during an end of the year press conference before leaving for his family vacation in Hawaii.

The destructive nature of the attack, and threats from the hackers that led the Hollywood studio to pull a comedy movie depicting the assassination of North Korea's leader, set it apart from previous cyber intrusions, the FBI said.

Obama said the United States will respond to the cyberattack now that U.S. authorities have linked the strike to the North Korean government.

"They caused a lot of damage. And we will respond," Obama said.
