Peruvian agriculture endangered by climate change and multinationals

Small-scale farming representatives from across Peru gathered at the 16th National Agricultural Convention to shed light on the difficulties faced by the sector. They are deeply concerned about about climate change which is reaping havoc and affecting crop yields and survival. They fear this will cause food shortages in the short term. The small farmers have also expressed worries over the government's neo-liberal policies which grant permits to large multinational agricultural companies. Many of these companies take over huge swaths of land, leaving small farmers without their usual irrigation sources, or contaminating them, and some use genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which endanger the survival of small scale farming in the country. teleSUR
